Often this is achieved by inflating scale and rejecting context. This thesis is a series of follies that challenge the modern typology of icon in an urban environment exploring programmatic relationships of existing activity. The selected site exists between the redundancies of a commercial corridor and a residential quadrant in the neighborhood of North Park. Temporal events and movements are congregated and analyzed to create a snapshot of the context’s character and informing the choreography of folly programs. From these observations emerged four categories: interval, performance, depot, and thoroughfare. The design investigates these programs through follies in relationship to scale and permanence. The location relative to the ocean paired with the mountainous land creates a rainshadow effect in the Atacama Desert. The severe lack of moisture in the air, high amounts of solar radiation, and rocky terrain causes daily temperatures to fluctuate 40°C daily. This makes the region one of the most extreme environments inhabited. The city is pushing to establish itself separate from its mining town identity. This project aims to synthesize existing contextual elements to complement and strengthen the existing landscape, activity, and identity of central Calama. The site is situated on a commercial pedestrian corridor that hosts the extremely diverse activity center fluctuating based on personal routines, tourism, political tensions, thermal comfort, and cultural traditions. Based on observations and analysis of a lobby gallery, the team created design objectives. Primarily, the ladder should provide a resting point from which to view the gallery from a new perspective and to sit while doing so. The team agreed that the structure should allow for more than simply moving a person from point to point. The steps extend past what is necessary to provide shelving to augment the gallery and lobby space. By use of 3D modeling and computer-aided machining software, four plywood sheets were milled for assembly. Many members are double thickness to increase rigidity and strength. Part of the beauty of the object is in the process. The fact that this piece can be flat-packed and press fit together adds an addition level of sophistication.
